1. Hidden Mold
Your home inspector should have looked for mold but there are spots it might be hidden. If you smell an earthy, musty scent in part of your home, then it is likely you have mold. Contrary to popular belief, most mold does not harm most people, but if you have repeated, ongoing exposure, it can be an issue. This can lead to trouble breathing and even anaphylactic shock. 2. Asbestos
Up until the middle of the 20th century, asbestos was a normal building material that was often used. Once it was found to be a serious carcinogen, it is no longer legal to use it. It can cause tissue damage and eventually death. If your water heater, stove, and gas appliances are properly ventilated, they safely release carbon monoxide. 4. Protect Yourself from Fire
Are you surprised to learn that the National Fire Prevention Association reports that seven people in the United States die from a fire on an average day? Most of these fires involve using cooking equipment, candles, and appliances – but the number one cause is dryer lint. Make sure your new appliances are cleaned out and that you have smoke alarms installed throughout your home.
5. Protect Yourself Against Slippery Surfaces
Bathrooms are one of the most dangerous rooms in the home, thanks to their surfaces that often get wet and slippery. This can lead to falls that are embarrassing, painful, and potentially deadly. Make sure you have a bath mat in the tub to give you something to grip. You can also install grab bars to be even safer. Take extra steps if necessary in your particular home.
